I just came across this awesome Aussie designer, Karla Spetic. Her Autumn/Winter 2010 collection is titled "Dreamer" and I think it's a perfect name for the mute, pastel palate (though punctuated with exciting bits of bold orange). My favorite pieces of the collection are the suit and pants combo with illustrations by local artist Caitlin Shearer for a truly unique pattern (see above). It looks like, for now, all her stuff is Down Under. Let's hope her pieces become more widely available. Stateside, stat!!

Hot damn, it's London Fashion Week already! British designer Hannah Marshall just showed her collection of lush velvets and essential body con numbers. Those cut outs are ingenious, especially the velvet mini dress with those garter-like strips. I had the pleasure of being introduced to Marshall during a concert a while back, which ensued in a hilarious photo of me, our mutual friend and her because I was wearing a bold yellow print dress and everything else in the photo was goth as fuck. Not that it's a bad thing! What's up with my latest gravitation towards goth? Anyway, see more of her stunning collection here.

You can always leave it to Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough to shake things up at NY Fashion Week. Those mini-dresses with collar and tie are to die for. Those flirty patterned dresses with the cutouts at the sides are kinda amazing. But most of all, I love those high-waist acid punk printed jeans (a collaborative effort with denim masters J Brand)! The New York Times called these looks "vigorously sexy" yet reflexive of the big trend of the moment: modesty. Whatever. I just know that Proenza Schouler is dead on target season after brilliant season. More at Style.com. Also, I still want these booties so badly.

Love Brigade holds a particular place in my heart because I have watched them from their first season with their medieval-rock inspired clothes to their newest collection full of bright blues and completely wearable designs. True to their haunts in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (and much like us at Threads and Shreds) they find inspiration in music and bring it to the forefront with their fashion. (Special shout out to their Justice is Love Brigade and MJ One Glove tee!) And lucky for me the avid online shopper, Love Brigade recently opened up their own online store! Check them out here. Sleepwalking. Mexican bordertowns. Melted candle wax. A southwestern road trip. The Mulleavy Sisters of Rodarte managed to weave these ideas and images into their entrancing new collection. Their vision for Fall 2010 comprised of various pieces of knitwear, pops of floral patterns, and their signature crisscrossed swaths of silks. The highlight of the show, however, were the four haunting gowns - call it "ghostly bridal" - at the conclusion of the show. Against a backdrop of flickering candles, the models wearing the aforementioned gowns stood motionless by front of the walkway, waiting for the final walk. The stage lights dimmed and black lights flickered on, transforming those white bridal gowns into otherworldly apparitions. Not only do Kate and Laura Mulleavy know how to tailor gorgeous pieces of art -- they know how to produce lasting images that haunt and inspire. Last night, Marc Jacobs showed his Fall 2010 collection at the Armory. His show is undoubtedly one of the main highlights of New York Fashion Week - we look for the drama, the cohesive vision, the spectacular. This season seems a bit "safe" at first, but perhaps the tried-and-true feminine shapes and pastel palette are fitting for these times, when everyone wants to invest in key, lasting pieces rather than fast fashion looks. But there is something very refreshing about the demure hemlines and flats paired with ankle socks, considering the ubiquity of the tough chick look (see below).

Anyway, the first few looks - the demureness of it all? - reminded me of an English romance I've been aching to see: Bright Star. (Totally the wrong time period, I know.) Something about the palette and silhouettes of this collection that brings to mind the fields of bluebonnets. See the entire collection on Style.com.

I first heard of the hubbub surrounding this collection when my pal Colleen, a blogger extraordinaire who's romping around tents and studios this week, tweeted about the collection. There's been a bit of a rumble about H&M and their supposedly not-so-organic line of "organic clothing." Sure, if you care to wear 100% organic, being fooled into thinking partially modified material is the good stuff is a crap move. Then I came across Fashionista's recounting of the story which spilled into a little op-ed piece extolling how very unsustainable "the bigger picture" is. Namely, the fuel used in shipping materials from place to place during production and then during shipment to H&M's worldwide stores. So, the article concludes, "if you’re that committed to wearing sustainable fashion, you should be buying items that are produced locally with locally-grown materials." Even designers are saying you should buy locally.

So what if you don't live in New York City? Or LA?

And what if you're that small business and there's demand outside of the confines of your brick-and-mortar store? Do you just ignore the promise of a bigger customer base and shun those who don't have the money to make the pilgrimage (which btw would also cost "gas guzzling fuel" unless you walked it or had a purely electric car). I mean, shuttling around your goods from boutique to boutique is a smaller-scaled version of what big chains do no?

Point is, "buying locally" is great and all, but to me it's just not realistic unless you live in a big fashion metropolis or there's a fuel-free alternative to shipping.

What do you think? How important is purely sustainable fashion? More importantly, how realistic do you think it is?

"It's like the triple G's: Glam, goth, grunge. Like, what I'm wearing has the power to completely entrance you." I have to thank my pal Jamie for turning me to my favorite new reality T.V. show, Bravo's Kell on Earth, which follows fashion PR firm People's Revolution and its leader Kelly Cutrone. But for all I care, the show can simply follow Cutrone's assistant Andrew Mukamal around. He is the best part of the show. He said that quote above in regards to one of his fashion week oufits: a floor-length sequined gown paired with a flannel shirt, dark boots, and an artillery of silver hardware accessories. Also noteworthy in this post: Kate Lanphear, style director at Elle, with her signature platinum bob and coveted collection of studded and shiny accessories. Anyway, these two are now prominently pinned to my mental mood board, prompting me to build my own mass of threatening accessories. See you on the dark side...! (OMG I just realized this show is ON tonight!)

I was flipping through a copy of Bust magazine when I saw one of the models in a spread workin' a vintage watch face necklace. I'd never heard of Thea Grant but I went to her website and fell in love. Looking through her collections made me feel like a child at a candy store. Full disclosure: those YSL rings are the only reason I'm making this post. The chunky artsy rings first came into my life maybe a year ago, but they were sold out by the time I decided to take the plunge and splurge. Now they're back in stores and back on my consciousness. Like history, fashion tends to repeat itself. I remember a few years ago thinking "The '90s will never make a come back," but lo and behold we've now got everyone substituting pants with leggings (including myself because they are just so comfy!). Above are some of the fashion trends from the last couple of decades that I enjoy: '60s mod, '70s high waisted bell bottoms, '80s poofy dress with bold prints, and what I like to call "flannel chic" (Mary-Kate Olsen does it so well) from the 1990s.

Yoyo Pan and Michelle Wu have created one of the most sculptural and intricate pieces of art for their footwear label Heavy Machine. Between the two, the design duo boast degrees from the Fashion Institute of Technology, Polimoda in Florence, and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from down under, and that makes perfect sense because it takes some crazy geniuses to conjure up shoes like these. Pan and Wu, now located in Taiwan, have already garnered some buzz in the fashion blogosphere, with adulation from U.K.'s Susie Bubble, Elle Taiwan and more. I'm smitten!

Yesterday was the 16th Screen Actors Guild Awards, and like any awards show, there was great fashion on the red carpets.
#1 Michelle Monaghan - I love this Calvin Klein beaded gown so much because of the sleekness, silhouette, and the subtle reference (in my mind) to the cover art of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures.
#2 Drew Barrymore - Dear Drew can look plain batshit crazy on the red carpet, but she keeps it sweet and darling in this tiered Monique Lhuillier confection.
#3 Diane Kruger - This is perfection. She wins back major fashion points after that Golden Globes magenta mess of Christian Lacroix. However, Diane is missing one important accessory here: her boy Joshua Jackson.
#4 Anna Paquin - Walk, walk, fashion baby in Alexander McQueen! (Speaking of McQueen, I am seeing GaGa tonight!)

Every year I watch the big award shows not so much to see who brings home the trophy but to oggle at pretty dresses and shiny accessories. Being in a business school, I am accustomed to seeing people in suits every day. Talk about stuffy! Of course we all want to look organized, smart, and put together... but we want to dress to be comfortable and we want our clothes to reflect our (awesome) personalities. Three words: the boyfriend blazer. Loose enough to not feel restricted in it but not too baggy as to look like a bag lady. To say that Alexander McQueen rocks is a great understatement. How can I even begin to describe his latest masterpiece of a collection? Those shoes! That make-up! Those digital prints! This Spring/Summer 2010 collection has a lot to digest and a lot to draw inspiration from.

Anyway, I forgot to put up some songs for my last post, so I'll insert one here. I have just seen three of these bands (kind of) during the WFMU Fest in Brooklyn, which I was photographing for The Fader. Pissed Jeans, on the venerable label Sub Pop, is friggin amazing live. Talk Normal is a promising new local band. Lydia Lunch is still as badass as ever. I'm throwing in a track by Zola Jesus, a.k.a. Nika Roza Danilova, another prolific young musician who I want to be BFFs with.

Finally, leave it to London fashion blogger Susie Bubble for bold statements. I said it before, and I'll say it again: for fall, try unexpected splashes of color!

Gotta love that sassy chic that is Alice + Olivia's fall collection. Over-sized knitwear, rocker bows, and androgynous goodness. I'm loving the grey/black tiered dress with the large bow (second from right) and using elements of the 80s in a fashion-forward way. Definitely going to have to save up and splurge on some of these items (because college loans can stretch just a liiiiiiiitle bit farther right? right?). If you're looking to get inspired, try mixing up some of these classic elements in your wardrobe, vintage style. Like this bow dress, or ruffled blouse.

This fall, forget the usual fall palettes (mustard yellows and browns) because it's all about turquoise! Brighten up any outfit with this color and remember that just because the weather is getting dreary doesn't mean your wardrobe has to, too! This whole summer I've been channeling my inner girly girl (not that it needed much channeling) and have fallen completely head over heels in love with floral prints. The only piece I am missing from my floral collection is a pair of floral print shorts. Anyone wanna hook a girl up? I've recently gotten into polka dots. Not crazy neon 1980s polka dots, but soft, feminine, classy polka dots. Perhaps a new love? However, as we transition from summer to fall, I am reluctant to let go of my summer wardrobe (mainly consisting of dresses and rompers).... but wait a minute, all I have to do is throw on a snazzy cropped jacket over a summer dress and a pair of tights and voila! Perfect fall outfit. Plus, this means floral cardigans! I'm excited for the season to come and the outfits to be worn!

Happy September, everyone! Consider the ladylike prints and shapes of Marni as you're packing away your summertime clothes and bringing back your fall / winter gear into your wardrobe. While the Fall / Winter 2009 collection was a superb exercise in "rich, dark layering of texture and iridescence," I very much love Marni because of the lighter patterns. Believe me, I will be winterizing my purple Marni shift (...I went all out shopping in tax-free Hong Kong) well into the dreary, cold season with thick colored tights and heavy cardigans. But yeah, I always support injecting some color and prints into your fall / winter wardrobe because it is always so much sunnier that way! Ornate, draped numbers brought a breath of fresh air to some Fall/Winter 2009 collections. This fall, stand out among dark knits and the usual autumn garb with delicate, strategically ruched and draped patterned pieces. For the bolder lot, try shimmery dresses like the first and fourth look, both Balenciaga. To tone it down, you can test out a muted palate, like the gorgeous 3.1 Phillip Lim stunner (center left) or the whispery Isabel Marant look (center right). Oh, Chloe. The simplicity of these designs are what draws me to them. It's all about the fitted lady suits, shirt dresses, and bling bling pants. Harem pants always make me think of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin. It's out with the skinnies and in with the... big and poofy? You'd think shiny gold poofy pants would look gaudy, wouldn't you? Instead, this model from Chloe's Spring 2009 collection looks classy and sassy.

Having been away most of the summer abroad, I just got back to New York City. While unpacking and settling down for the summer, it hit me -- summer is nearly over! Where did it go? My friends tell me that summer in the city didn't even feel like summer because of the unseasonable weather. Anyway, this inaugural Fashion Playlist is a celebration of the fabled summer romance. More specifically, the lack thereof. Maybe it's not such a bad thing, as Cold Cave, my fave band of the moment, would attest. According to Phoenix's jingle, "Love ain't nothing but a sore." Still, be a romantic with feminine silhouettes - try a light cardigan over a floral dress or a simple and chic pencil skirt. Remember to brace yourself for the impending cold though. Unless you're one of the lucky ones, summer lovings will end as fall winds roll in. The chilly soundscapes of Xeno & Oaklander and Fever Ray are my go-to tunes for the dwindling days of sun rays. Transition into fall by throwing eye-catching items - like a checked blazer or bold print sweater - over lighter pieces.

Wear it as a top, wear it as a bottom, or wear it as a dress... the bottom line is: wear sequins! In the past, sequins were stitched on to clothing as a display of wealth. Nowadays, throw on a sequined top and you'll be the life of the party.

Floral prints, zippers, plaid, blazers galore! Charlotte Ronson proves once again that designers can produce very, very wearable pieces. Gotta love the simple pieces with a little extra side of BAMF (that's Bad Ass Motha F*cker). I can see myself rocking that purple zippered shoulder cut-off dress to an after party, or taking the detailed jet black blazer out on the town. Lastly, if there is one moral to be had, it's that you can make your outfit pop without the nu rave colors or pants pre-ripped to within an inch of their life. Yeah, I went there.
